Parenting Advice
By Jean Tracy, MSS, Fri Dec 9th

Researchers tell us that 36 million acts of sibling rivalryoccur every year. Some are severe. Most are normal. When yourkids fight, they want you in the middle. They want you to be thejudge and jury. They each want you to take their side. Iremember my own mother's reaction. When I was a kid, my brother,Art, and I fought constantly. We kicked, we teased, we shoved,we called each other names, and we rolled over and over on theground punching each other as hard as we could. My mother said,"I was sure you two would kill each other."

Many fights started in our backyard. In my excitement to win thefights, my yelling grew so loud that the whole neighborhood knewwe were slugging it out again. My, mother, a rather shy person, would throw up a back room window and yell, "For God's sakeJeanie, shut up!" The whole neighborhood heard her too. Hershouts embarrassed me and hurt my feelings but they didn't stopme. My brother and I fought like that almost every day. Andalmost everyday mom would shout the same command.

Looking back, I can't remember what Art and I fought about. Ican remember my mother's words. How about you?

When your kids fight, and you step in the middle, what will your kids

remember?

Your yelling? Your swearing? Your hitting? Yourlecturing? Your letting them duke it out?

Knowing what to do in the heat of the moment isn't easy. What iseasy, is letting your own anger explode. If you do, what are youreally teaching your kids?

Parenting Tips and Advice:

Talk the situation over with your partner or someone youtrust. Come up with a logical plan for handling futurefights. Tell your kids (when they're not fighting) what willhappen the next time they fight. Determine to respond withyour reason and not your emotion. Follow through with theplan.

If you react to your kid's fighting the way my mother did, youcan change.

Ask yourself these three questions:

What will my kids remember about my reactions? What am Ireally teaching them? What do I want to teach them?

Here's to your success!

Reading in a Tree
On Writing, Reading, and Growing Up: Today is like many of the summer days I spent at my grandparents' house in Indiana—except I am writing, instead of reading and I am sitting in a chair on my deck, instead of on a branch in a tree growing in front of my grandparents' house. But the wind is blowing gently under the umbrella, just like it blew through the leaves so many years ago.
Having It All: A Mother's Thoughts about Balance
On Writing and Parenting: I am an 80s child. My teenage years were spent in the midst of the Cold War, punk rock, and hair-sprayed hair. I was lucky enough to have parents who raised me to believe that I could accomplish anything I wanted if I worked hard enough. I was unlucky enough to spend my formative years brainwashed into thinking that I could "have it all."
Multiple Intelligences Action Research
Action Research: The following articles are all components of one action research study that investigated whether multiple intelligences based instruction had an effect on students' attitudes and achievement in school.
No, No, No -- What Else is a Parent to Say?
Parenting: The word no is probably the most overused word in the English language. I speak from experience since I myself use it frequently. If I had not already recognized the overuse of this two-letter-word which has invaded my home, I would have been startled when my almost-two-year-old son began chanting "no-no-no, no-no-no" while walking through the house with a cup of juice.
Starting a Freelance Writing Career (or Thoughts About Taking the Plunge)
On Writing: Nike's ad has taken on new meaning for me of late; "Just do it!" runs through my mind like a mantra. Although my dreams have nothing to do with athletic shoes and little to do with athletics (unless you count the long list of ideas I have developed which revolve around my sons and their activities), I have spent a long time avoiding the one thing I've always wanted to do — write.
Starting a Freelance Writing Career (or How I Sifted Through the Muck and Found My Way)
On Writing: So, the decision is final. I am a writer. Actually, I have always been a person who writes, but I have never applied the term to myself in a professional sense. Having pushed aside my financial fears and gained the requisite self-confidence, I began to surf the net in earnest for information about how to begin a freelance writing career.
Isolation: Hawthorne v. Melville
Literary Criticism: Isolation is one of the central themes of The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and of "Bartleby, the Scrivener" by Herman Melville. The manner in which each of the central characters responds to their isolation ultimately reveals their fates.
